INTERACTION OF SEED VIGOR AND DOSE OF NITROGEN IN COVER ON WHEAT YIELD

Abstract

High quality seeds and good fertilization must be considered as the fundamental basis for production. Seed quality may have interactions with other factors such as Nitrogen (N) fertilization, causing an impact on wheat yield. The objective was to evaluate the vigor impacts of two batches of wheat seeds (Low and High Vigor) of the same genotype and their interaction with different doses of N (0, 50, 75, 100 and 125 kg ha-1) applied in coverage, on wheat yield. The trial was installed in IPTA Yhovy, located in the Department of Canindeyú, in which the initial aerial cover (CAI), number of tillers/plant (CMP), number of spikes per area (CEA), number of grains per spike (CGE), thousand seed weight (PMS) and grain yield (RG). Statistical analysis was done with ANAVA and Tukey's Test at 5%. The High Vigor seeds provided better performance in the initial growth of the crop, in the number of tillers/plant and in the number of grains per spike, no impact was noted, being characteristics mainly established by varietal genetics. The high vigor seeds and the application of N in cover in a range of 75 to 100 kg ha-1 provide greater capacity of retention of spikes/plant. Grain yield was affected depending on the vigor of the seed in interaction with the doses of N applied, the plants from high vigor seeds and without N application, showed a similar performance to the plants from low vigor seeds, but with applications of high doses of N.
